Boiler House Operator



Schedule:
12 hours a day 7a-7p
4 days on 4 days off
4 cycles then switch to 3rd shift 7p-7a

The Boiler House B Operator is to assist as necessary in the operation of the Boiler House and utility generation, having the capabilities to perform their duties, the Boiler House A operator’s duties, and the duties of the Waste Treatment Operator. They will make sure all process equipment in the area of responsibility is operating safely and efficiently and notify the Boiler House “A” Operator of any abnormal conditions that warrant corrective action.


Responsibilities:
  • Follow all Department Safety Rules and Safe Job Practices.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of the boiler house utility area.
  • Have a C or better WWTP license.
  • Monitor all available process information frequently throughout the shift.
  • Makes routine checks on outside equipment at least three times daily.
  • Report visible stack emissions to EHS and complete the form when burning fuel oil.
  • Complete fuel oil tank inspection sheets.
  • Acknowledge all alarms and take preventive action on potential problems and/or corrective action on actual problems. Notify the A operator of the potential problem.
  • Take readings from the computer or process equipment and make checks on process variables as required. Such as:
    • Steam Boilers
    • Dowtherm Vaporizers
    • Air Compressors
    • Fire Pumps
    • Cooling Towers
    • Dowtherm Receiver Pumps
    • Fuel Oil Pumps
    • Tanks
    • High Lines
  • To perform routine Chemical Analysis on Low/High-Pressure Condensate, Feed Waters, all Steam Boilers, and Softeners, that is to run daily routine samples on the day shift and night shift.
  • To ensure the proper amount of chemicals are being added to the boilers to maintain proper feed water to the boilers.
  • Shut down and start-up equipment as the need arises.
  • Perform routine tasks as necessary to control the process.
  • They will interact/communicate with the Computer System when manually/automatically starting steam boilers, dowtherm vaporizers, setting or changing alarm status, or displaying various face plates/graphics.
  • Reads the control room logbook at the start of the shift
  • Coordinates all work efforts with the boiler house “A” operator.
  • Maintain communication with relieving shift personnel on any problems that might have occurred during the shift.
  • Enter performance gaps and complete Routine Duty Calendar (RDC).
  • Leads a JHA team on a particular job procedure to make sure the job is performed correctly.
  • Open and close any valves as the need arises.
  • Drain containment areas and document.
  • Report spills to EHS and area management.
  • Complete LDAR forms for all dowtherm leaks.
  • Passes on information the boiler house operators on process upsets, changes, shutdowns, and startups made during the daily operation.
  • Creates work orders on equipment when the need arises.
  • Assist in securing equipment and piping systems for routine or emergency repairs.
  • Keep neat, accurate, and timely records.
  • Coordinate with all customers (users) throughout the plant.
  • Reclaim Vaporizers
  • Check safety on vaporizers and steam boilers.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of the complete operations which include.
    • Dowtherm System, add to and remove dowtherm from the system as needed.

    • Nitrogen system

    • Boiler Feed Water system
    • Fire Pumps

    • Drum Pad Area
  • Handles all chemicals for the treatment of the Steam Boilers such as;
    • Optisperse
    • Cortrol IS3000 (Sulfite)
    • Caustic Soda
    • Steammate
  • Handle Start-ups, shutdowns, and maintenance preparations when the need arises
  • Have a basic knowledge in mathematics, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and calculating percentages.
  • Operate a forklift truck when the need arises; also have a license to drive a motor vehicle.
  • Operate large gate valves, and work from ladders, and high lines when necessary.
  • Perform routine housekeeping duties and keep a clean and orderly work area.
  • Pulls waste treatment samples on the weekends and visually tours the waste treatment area for any abnormal conditions on the night shift and weekends.
  • Notifies wastewater treatment operators when abnormal conditions exist so corrective action may be taken.
  • Opens the Drum Pad area when users bring drums to the drum pad after hours and fill out the waste received form.
  • Monitor WWTP on night shifts and weekends.
  • Adjust the WWTP at the direction of the WWTP A operator.
  • Ensure that the WWTP is inspected and the logbook is signed by a C or better operator on weekends.
  • Monitor Techtrol computer and call areas when alarms occur.
  • Complete all required training including live, VTA, and respirator physical and fit testing.
  • Report RQ spills to the proper government agencies.
  • Follow all plant policies and procedures.
  • Lead safety meetings and area safety audits.
  • Complete required SOAR observations.
  • Write notifications for all maintenance requests.
  • Call maintenance duty person when equipment issues arise on off shifts.
  • Meet minimum requirements for attendance.
  • Attend morning meetings
  • Issue permits for work in the area.
  • Housekeeping
