Water Treatment Plant Operator


Function:

The Waste Treatment Plant A Operator is responsible for the overall operation of the waste treatment plant; monitoring all available process information frequently throughout the shift to ensure standard operating conditions and NPDES permitting are being maintained on plant equipment, and in particular he/she will analyze problems as they arise and take the necessary action to correct the problem in a safe and efficient manner. 



Qualifications:
  • HS Diploma or greater
  • Water Treatment License

Responsibilities:
  • Have a thorough knowledge of the waste treatment plant and all licenses are up to date.
  • Monitor all available process information frequently throughout the shift
  • Acknowledge all alarms and take preventive action on potential problems and/or corrective action on actual problems.
  • Take readings from the computer on processing equipment and make checks on process variables as required.
  • Shut down and start-up equipment as the need arises.
  • Perform routine tasks as necessary to control the process.
  • Interacts/communicates with the D-3 system when setting or changing set points or alarm status, displaying various face plate/graphics.
  • Read the control room logbook at the start of shift
  • Coordinates all work efforts with wastewater treatment maintenance operator.
  • Maintain communication with night shift personnel at the boiler house of any problems that might have occurred during the night.
  • Start the decant sludge tank.
  • Pull outfall samples, MG samples, pre-treatment samples, and waste treatment samples and carry samples to the lab and other designated areas.
  • Pull all required samples per sample schedule.
  • Pulls aeration sample and checks the sludge rate.
  • Run 02 samples by using the waste treatment sample equipment.
  • Run, record, and clean up nutrient tests.
  • Set up composite samplers to take samples automatically.
  • Record sample results in the computer.
  • Keep neat, accurate, and timely records.
  • Enter performance gaps, manufacturing events and improvement ideas into the Otis database.
  • Check clarifier sludge blanket with a rod to show sludge level.
  • Open and close any valves as the need arises.
  • Inspect ground water dowtherm recovery system.
  • Perform routine checks on all the equipment and takes reading on the equipment as necessary
  • Perform routine checks on 001 and 002 outfalls.
  • Performs routine checks on dikes and drains the water from dikes when necessary.
  • Perform necessary calibration on meters and polymer pumps.
  • Analyzes problems by using flow diagrams, graphic displays and take necessary action to correct the problem.
  • Passes on information to the boiler house operators on process upsets, or changes made during the daily operation.
  • Creates work orders on equipment when the need arises
  • Secure all equipment and piping systems for routine or emergency repairs.
  • Keep a clean and orderly work area
  • Bush hog the areas around the WWTP, the field between the building and the railroad tracks, the field north of the 5.5-million-gallon basin and the area around 002 outfall building.
  • Run the sludge press as necessary.
  • Fill out manifest sheet on waste management sludge hopper.
  • Pull storm water samples as necessary during periods of rain longer than 30 minutes and a total of one tenth of an inch of rain twice during the year. A total of eighteen samples is to be pulled from each outfall and placed in different size containers, iced down and add preservatives as listed.
  • Keep track of the chemicals received and used at the wastewater treatment plant.
  • Calculate Sludge Return Time (SRT) and Sludge Volume Index (SVI)
  • Run weekly chlorine standard. (Wednesday)
  • Set up weekly fecal coliform test, normally on Mondays.
  • Fill in for vacation.
  • Calibrate pH meters, DO meters and Temperature Probes.
  • Perform routine duties on COD analyzers such as mixing the chemicals, clean the tubing and calibrate the analyzer.
  • Pull a Chronic Toxicity sample as necessary to send to an outside lab.
  • Keeps track of all compliance issues concerning the waste treatment plant.
