JOB DESCRIPTION

FUNCTIONAL TITLE: Laboratory Technician

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform physical/index/chemical construction material laboratory testing, as assigned:

Concrete /CMU Testing (concrete cylinder/CMU/core prep and crushing,
Specialty concrete testing, etc.).
HMA testing (gradations, AC content, density, etc.)
Soils (roadway base, select fills, subgrade, etc.), testing (moisture/density, atterberg,
Gradations, specialty, strength, etc.).
Aggregate testing.

Perform assigned testing in accordance with established procedures and specifications, including proper documentation of testing results. These methods include ASTM, AASHTO, DOT, US Corp of Engineers, etc.
Maintain and calibrate (or verify calibration) testing equipment, including documentation of such calibration. Maintain a neat/clean/safe laboratory and work space. Properly document hours worked and assist in client billing efforts.
Maintain company paid training (in house and external) and certifications; to include regular review of pertinent testing methods.
Represent the company in a professional manner through face to face, verbal and written communication. This includes communication with clients, coworkers, project managers and others.

Use laboratory equipment in a safe manner to include company vehicles and understanding, adhering and participating in the client Health and Safety Program.
Perform other legal and moral duties as assigned by Direct Report, including but not limited to, field observation, sampling and testing.
Meet priorities and deadlines as directed by Direct Report.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EMPLOYEE SHALL HAVE THE FOLLOWING MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School diploma or GED equivalent.
Understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
Sufficient math, science and English writing skills to record and analyze laboratory results.
Possess valid Texas driver’s license and meet company’s automobile insurability requirements.
Enthusiastic and receptive attitude.

ABILITY TO:

Communicate well. This includes verbal and written (English) communication both through email and through word processing and spreadsheets.
Comply with all attendance and tardy requirements per company policy.

PREFERRED:

TxDOT certification and experience – SB101, SB102, SB103, SB201, SB202; 1A and or 1B.
ACI Field Grade 1, ACI Aggregates, ACI Concrete Strength.

PHYSICAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the principal duties and responsibilities of this job. Heavy lifting and carrying sixty (60+) pounds of equipment and/or sample containers. Maneuver within the confines of the laboratory, including accessing shelves, cabinets, etc. up to six (6) feet high, up ramps, and over rough/uneven surfaces. Dexterity and care to utilize delicate and small laboratory equipment. Distinguish colors and shades of colors to describe soil and/or other construction materials.
Must pass a drug test prior to employment and will be subject to post-accident, random and reasonable cause testing during employment.
The employee is required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to stand, sit, and stoop, kneel, or crouch. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Conditions include humidity, noise, significant and pervasive dust, fumes, smoke, gases, electrical energy, and grease and oils. Laboratory and field environment may contain dangerous chemicals and solvents.
May be required to work protracted and irregular hours to meet deadlines and budgets. This frequently includes 8+ hours per day, sometimes requires night and weekend work, but may not. Work related responsibilities may require travel out of town to client offices, client offices, and project locations. This travel may be required at short notice.
