Night Shift Traction Power Supervisor

Industry: Commuter Rail Operations

Position Summary
The Night Shift Traction Power Supervisor is a front-line leader responsible for overseeing electrical and mechanical maintenance within the commuter rail Traction Power System. This position provides direct supervision of Night Shift Traction Power Technicians and ensures strict adherence to safety, regulatory compliance, and operational standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise, motivate, and train staff through coaching, counseling, and clear performance expectations.
  • Oversee inspection and maintenance of the Traction Electrification System (TES), including substations, feeders, the Overhead Catenary System (OCS), and return circuits.
  • Demonstrate experience in conductor maintenance, including wire sagging/tensioning, wire replacement, and wire repair.
  • Maintain familiarity with Substation environments, including construction, maintenance, and security protocols.
  • Promote strong safety awareness and enforce compliance with all safety procedures.
  • Manage documentation of inspections, test results, labor, and materials in the Maintenance Management System.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in computer programs related to preventive maintenance tracking, repair documentation, work orders, and generating safety briefings for crews.
  • Ensure efficient, high-quality execution of routine inspections and testing.
  • Respond to emergency situations and severe weather events affecting the TES; coordinate with emergency teams and implement temporary solutions as needed.
  • Monitor new equipment installations and testing, identifying and reporting deficiencies.
  • Develop testing procedures and direct technicians in testing control apparatuses and equipment.
  • Participate in accident/incident investigations and recommend corrective actions.
  • Ensure the availability of necessary supplies, parts, and tools.
  • Create and maintain written procedures for inspections and maintenance activities.
  • Support recruitment efforts, including attending job fairs and participating in interviews.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all relevant rules, regulations, procedures, and contractual obligations.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of an Accredited Apprenticeship Program (IBEW, BRS, IEEE).
  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience required.
  • At least 3 years of experience in high-voltage feeder distribution systems and controls.
  • Experience with high and low voltage systems, grounding techniques, lockout/tagout procedures, and interpreting one-line diagrams and maps.
  • Knowledge of railroad operating practices and train control systems preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions.
  • Ability to work nights, holidays, weekends, and overtime as needed.
  • Ability to work at heights exceeding 6 feet.
  • Valid state driver’s license required.
  • Ability to obtain a Class A CDL license.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical examination.
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. and pass a background check, drug/alcohol screening, and comply with all applicable company policies.
